Hiking · exposed scramble

The 5.4-mile round trip starts on a paved switchback through Refrigerator Canyon, climbs Walter's Wiggles to Scout Lookout, then commits to the chains for the final half-mile knife-edge spine. Honest exposure, fatal-fall potential, 1,488 feet of elevation gain. Not a hike for an off day — but if you're at Anasazi Cliffs, you're here for moments like this.

The permit lottery is on Recreation.gov and changes regularly — check current windows before booking dates. A sunrise start is cooler, emptier, and catches golden light on the Great White Throne. If the lottery doesn't work out, East Mesa Trail (below) is the only hike in Zion that lets you look down on Angels Landing without the chains.

Before you go

  • Not recommended for guests afraid of heights
  • Children under 12 strongly discouraged on the chains section
  • Avoid the chains in wet weather or thunderstorm windows
