Canyon Trail Rides has been the NPS-authorized horseback concessioner inside Zion since 1959. They run two trips out of the stables next to Zion Lodge: a 1-hour Virgin River ride to the Court of the Patriarchs ($65 typical), and a 3-hour Sandbench Trail climb ($120 typical) that climbs ~500 feet to a Zion ridge with sustained canyon views.

The horses are trail-broken, slow, and patient — ideal for first-time riders. Minimum age 7 for the 1-hour, 10 for the 3-hour. Maximum rider weight 220 lbs. Both rides operate seasonally (March–October typically). Reservations recommended 1-3 days ahead.

This is a great pairing with a Zion Lodge breakfast or lunch — the stables are right next door, and the experience feels like the Old West version of seeing the canyon.

Before you go

  • Booking 1-3 days ahead in peak season
  • Bring a hat and sunscreen — the Sandbench climb has limited shade
  • Closed-toe shoes required
