Wander frozen sand dunes of Navajo sandstone in Snow Canyon State Park — a flat 1-mile loop where every kid finds a 'perfect lookout.'

The Petrified Dunes are exactly what they sound like — sand dunes frozen in time, the result of ancient Sahara-like deserts compressed into Navajo sandstone over millions of years. Now they're solid slickrock with the wave shapes of the original dunes still visible. Walking on them feels like exploring an alien planet.
The trail is a 1-mile loop in Snow Canyon State Park, completely flat, with no marked path through the dunes themselves — you wander where you want. Every kid finds their own 'perfect lookout' or sandstone slide. Adults find the photo angle they've been looking for.
**Best window:** golden hour. The last 30 minutes of sun turns the slickrock through a sequence of pink, peach, and red. Camera people: bring a tripod, the colors shift fast.
