Easy-moderate hike

Watchman Trail is the best Zion hike that doesn't require the shuttle. 3.3 miles round-trip, easy-to-moderate, gaining 368 feet to a sandstone bench overlooking Springdale, the Towers of the Virgin, and the Watchman Mountain itself.

The trailhead is right at the visitor center — park, hike, return without ever boarding a shuttle bus. That alone makes it the right pick for guests who want to see Zion's signature views without committing to a shuttle day.

**Sunset is the move.** The west-facing overlook catches the last hour of light on the towers. Plan to top out 30-40 min before sunset, take photos, head down with daylight to spare. Bring a headlamp for the descent in case you linger too long.

Before you go

  • Trail is exposed — limited shade
  • Some scrambly sections near the top — careful with small kids
  • Limited parking at the visitor center on weekends
