- Our take
Apple Valley, Utah has almost no restaurants or stores, so plan to stock up before you arrive. The nearest full grocery stores are in Hurricane, about 17 minutes away, and the best restaurant choices are spread across Hurricane, La Verkin, Hildale, Virgin and Springdale. Most of our guests cook a few nights at the cabin and eat out on the days they’re already driving.
The quiet is the reason people stay at our cabins in Apple Valley, and the lack of services is the other side of that coin. Here’s how we tell guests to handle food, town by town.
Eating in Apple Valley itself
Apple Valley is a small rural community spread along UT-59, with no real town center. The one place to eat that we can point you to is Jan’s Diner, inside Little Creek Station. You order at the counter, and there’s a patio. It’s handy for a quick bite on arrival day or when you’ve forgotten something.
Beyond that, there’s no grocery store in Apple Valley. Plan on doing your shopping in Hurricane.
Where to buy groceries near Apple Valley
Do one good grocery run on your way in. Hurricane is on the route from St. George, I-15 and Las Vegas, so it’s an easy stop.
| Store | Town | Drive from the cabins | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Lin’s Fresh Market | Hurricane (1120 State St) | About 17 minutes | Full grocery with a pharmacy. Open Mon–Thu 6 a.m.–11 p.m., Fri–Sat until midnight, Sun 7 a.m.–10 p.m. |
| Walmart Supercenter | Hurricane (180 N 3400 W) | About 17 minutes | Groceries plus anything you forgot to pack |
| Sol Foods Supermarket | Springdale | About 50–55 minutes | Small grocery with a deli; good for picnic supplies on a Zion day |
Lin’s long hours make it the safe bet if your flight lands late or you’re coming in after dark. Check current hours on the store’s site before a late arrival, since they can change on holidays.
Restaurants near Apple Valley, town by town
Drive times below are from our cabins and assume normal traffic. Many restaurants in this area adjust their hours by season, and some close for part of the winter, so check hours before you go. Greater Zion, the county tourism office, keeps a dining guide for Hurricane and La Verkin that’s a good place to confirm what’s open.
Hurricane (about 17 minutes)
Hurricane has the most choice close to the cabins. Places listed by Greater Zion include:
- Main Street Cafe
- Rooster Run Cafe
- Pig’s Ear American Bistro
- La Fonda Grill
- Muddy Bees Bakery
- The Grille at Sand Hollow Resort
- The Pizza Wagon
If you’re spending a day at Sand Hollow State Park, The Grille at Sand Hollow Resort is the obvious stop on the way back.
La Verkin (about 20 minutes)
La Verkin sits just across the Virgin River from Hurricane, on UT-9 toward Zion.
- River Rock Roasting Co. is our favorite stop on the way to or from Zion: coffee, baked goods and wood-fired pizza, with a deck over the Virgin River gorge. Read more on our River Rock Roasting page.
- Stage Coach Grille
- Red Fort Cuisine of India
Hildale (about 20 minutes)
Hildale is east of the cabins on UT-59, toward the Arizona line. Water Canyon Winery offers wine tastings and charcuterie and makes an easy, low-key afternoon outing. Check their hours before you drive over.
Virgin (about 30 minutes)
Virgin is on UT-9 between La Verkin and Springdale, so it’s a natural dinner stop on the way back from Zion. Greater Zion lists Balcony One, Cactus Room and Black Sage at Open Sky Zion.
Springdale (about 50 to 55 minutes)
Springdale has the most restaurants near Zion, and it’s where you’ll be at the end of a park day anyway.

- Bit & Spur Restaurant & Saloon, 1212 Zion Park Blvd, serves Mexican-inspired Southwestern food for dinner. Our Bit & Spur page has more.
- King’s Landing Bistro, 1515 Zion Park Blvd at the Driftwood Lodge, is open for dinner Tuesday through Saturday and is a good pick for a nicer night out.
Springdale is busy from spring through fall, so we’d plan dinner reservations where a restaurant takes them.
Worth the drive
- Wood Ash Rye is in St. George, about 45 minutes from the cabins. It pairs well with a day at Snow Canyon State Park.
- Veyo Pies and Bakery in Veyo, north of St. George, is known across Southern Utah for its pies. It’s a day-trip treat rather than a dinner run; see our Veyo Pies page for ideas to pair it with.
What’s in your cabin kitchen
Every cabin gives you a head start, so your shopping list can be shorter than you might think.

In every cabin:
- Coffee and basic kitchen supplies
- A fire pit with free firewood
- Linens, towels and toiletries, so you won’t need to buy those
- Fast fiber Wi-Fi, if you want to look up a recipe or a restaurant’s hours
Cabin by cabin:
- Anasazi Cabin has a gas grill on its patio and a reverse-osmosis water filter.
- Little Creek Mesa Cabin has a gas grill on its private patio.
- Zion’s Gateway Cabin has a dishwasher, an air fryer and induction cooktops.
- Zion Ranger Cabin has a kitchenette, which suits simple meals and breakfasts.
For the full list of what each cabin includes, see our amenities page.
A simple grocery checklist
Here’s what we suggest for a two- or three-night stay, so you only shop once:
- Breakfast: eggs, bread or tortillas, fruit, yogurt or cereal, milk or creamer
- Trail food: sandwich supplies, salty snacks, bars, and more water than you think you need
- Dinners: one or two easy meals for the grill or stovetop, such as burgers, chicken, sausages or pasta
- Fire pit night: marshmallows, chocolate and graham crackers, plus roasting sticks if you have them
- Extras: cooking oil, salt and pepper, any spices you rely on, zip-top bags, sunscreen
- Drinks: whatever you like by the fire or in the hot tub (plastic cups are the safer choice around the hot tub)
On Zion days, pack lunch before you leave. Springdale restaurants get busy at lunch in peak months, and a picnic by the river beats waiting.
Tips for eating well on an Apple Valley trip
- Cook on arrival night. You’ll be tired, and it’s nice to stay put once you’re settled.
- Eat out on Zion days. You’re already in Springdale, Virgin or La Verkin, so dinner on the way home saves a second drive.
- Check hours, especially in winter. Smaller restaurants here change their schedules with the seasons. A quick look at a restaurant’s own website or a phone call saves a wasted trip.
- Keep a backup meal in the fridge. If the place you planned on is closed, you’ll be glad you did.

Our take
Apple Valley isn’t the place to stay if you want to walk to dinner every night. It works well if you like a quiet cabin, a grill and a fire, with good restaurants a short drive away when you want them. Shop once in Hurricane, eat out on your park days, and keep the evenings at the cabin simple. When you’re ready, check availability and book direct.
